This is one of those places that reminds you where fast food came from. A burger joint at the side of what used to be the main highway (before the Interstate came through) that offers a drive-up window without a talk-to-the-box ordering board that we've all gotten so familiar with. The burgers here aren't bad. They have "classic" burgers and then more deluxe editions. I had the bacon BBQ burger, and it was pretty good. The fries were the crinkle-cut versions that I had when I was a kid, and it was served with ketchup, ranch, and this strange orange sauce that was part 1000 Island, part something else, and definitely the predecessor to today's Big Mac sauce. The shakes here looked pretty good too (although I didn't partake). The burgers were fairly spendy, but then again that's because they probably use real beef and not the crap that McWhatever's calls hamburger. What was nice about this was that although it was counter service, I took a seat and waited (not too long) for the server to bring out my meal. The drink was in a fairly small cup (what we used before the small keg-o-coke that you get these days) and the refills were free (or at least I didn't pay for it). The TV was tuned to country music, the local newspaper was sitting on the table, and no one seemed to be in that big of a hurry. One disappointment was that the readerboard outside advertised Dave's Killer Bread, which I love, but it turns out that you can buy it there -- the burgers don't come on it, which would be even better! One other tip: the place is tiny, although there is a bar (which I didn't go into but must be similarly tiny) and tables outside. If it's a hot day and you can't bear to sit outside, then you might want to consider getting it to go. You won't find foodie paradise here, but you will find a decent burger and a reminder of what "quick service" used to look like, maybe in a more civilized time.

I will never eat at a fast food place again! I had a bacon burger (real bacon) and french fries that were perfect. I also had a milkshake (blackberry) which was very good. Yes, I needed a spoon. Service was great. I will definitely be back!

This place seems like a burger joint in a most classic sense. With a staggering variety of hamburgers it was hard to choose. I settled on the special, the Jumbo Burger Basket was offered on the day I visited. The dining area atmosphere seems is efficient. It seems to be a historic building, so it has that "feel" to it. (Food arrived) LOL! I didn't know that the burger I ordered blind was a triple burger! (Food has been eaten). The burger was great! Crisp veggies used in the standard burger veggies, including red onions which is my favorite. Very good pickles, and the bun was soft and tasty. I subbed the house burger sauce for mustard on mine, but I got a house sauce burger togo in order to give it a try later. I had ordered fries on the side and they came hot and fresh with chilled ketchup! A winning combo. In the end I came in for a new burger and ended being satisfied by a triple stack of deliciousness! I will be back and will probably drag a friend or two here also.

Nowhere NEAR what they were 10 yrs ago. Quality has went downhill, burgers are smaller but more expensive. I use to bring friends home from the military and this was their favorite place to eat but not anymore. Staff acts like they're doing you a favor by waiting on you. Big hoss bacon burger is more like a little joe now.

My grandpa always took me here as a kid. One of my favorite places in cottage grove. Always good service, and the burgers are as classic American as you could get. I come to Cottage Grove a few times a year and I try to visit bonanza whenever I can. If you're looking for something fancy keep driving. But if you're looking for a small town vibe with a cold beer and a great burger, this is your place.

Decent burgers, just not as good as they use to be as a kid growing up. Can be a bit slow at times as it seems they care more about the lotery customers here. If you dine in expect a greasy burger smell on you when you leave. Love the fry sauce here and options for the terminator burger.

Had lunch at bonanza today. Burger was ok, nothing special. Shake was great as always. What's with all the tweekers hanging out there every time I have eaten there?

Back in the early seventies when I was a little guy - like 3 or 4 - my pops would bring me to Bonanza for lunch. Back then, a sack of 5 burgers was 95 cents. Cottage Grove hadn't been invaded by the McJunior King yet. He would hold me up to the sliding window so I could order my own food. The waitress would call me "Honey" and my milkshake was so thick, I needed a spoon to eat it. Now it is forty years later. A sack of five burgers is ten bucks, and they taste just like they did in 1974. Pops has been gone since 2004. I hold my daughter up to the window so she can order her own food, and the waitress calls her "Honey." Her blackberry milkshake gives her a purple mustache. There are some things you can't put a price on.

Staff is rude, slow incompetent and pretty much useless. I asked for no onions on my burger I had a LOAD of onions on it. The burger was so over cooked it tasted like they were trying to make leather from the cows not food. All the tables were dirty and when I asked to get a towel to clean one off not even asking the staff to do it they told me there were napkins on the table. Umm?? The fries were a overly salty let down. I was barely able to choke down a fourth of my meal in an attempt to not make my bf feel bad for wanting to go there.

Bonanza is not bad for what it is. It's a lottery funded, hole in the highway 99, basic burger joint. They need a major face lift, moldy ceiling tiles look like they could fall at any time. There is a scary back lotto machine room. Just in case you would like to eat in the dark. I ordered the American burger. The new menu is a little confusing. I much preferred when the menu offered sizes of burger patty. Now it's just odd names for specialty burgers. You should keep it simple if you are going to have a 6 page menu, and expect to take orders at the counter. Otherwise offer full service. The burger was really quite good, very classic, very American. Could of used some more fries. There was only a small handful. While my girlfriends burger was atop a mountain of tater tots. Price is average. And at least they serve Budwieser.

Very good! If you are as hungry as bear on a full moon of April than this is the place to hibernate. There are many different food options to choose from. Hands down best specialty burger I have ever had. The only down side eating here is it requires a little bit of waiting, but the amazing food will easily make up for it. Big Ben. Peanut butter and chocolate shake. Boom- mind blown. You're welcome.

Yum! The reader board outside said Johnny Ringo...It turns out the Johnny Ringo Burger was the weekly Facebook Special! They have a new menu and it looked really nice and fun to read! The Johnny Ringo Burger was made with fresh local beef, cheddar and an onion ring...very, very good. You can choose shredded lettuce or green leaf or you can change the cheese up or add a fried egg, the options are endless...Some regulars told us the same folks own the Giant Burger in Springfield and the quality shows this. My friend had the Rueben and it was done just right too. They have awesome, shakes and Cyclones that put DQ to shame. My friend had the chunky monkey cyclone and I had a red velvet shake, they were served in the old fashioned tin cup with real whipped cream and a cherry! We really enjoyed our meal. I guess they are under new management and the staff was very nice and helpful. The place was busy, a bit funky but clean, worth the drive to the Grove for sure! A step back in time to the good old burger and shake days...

Bonanza met our expectations...good, not amazing. Our burgers (1/2 and 1/3 lb American burgers) were hot and freshly made ad we had too many fries to finish. Overall, a pleasant experience.

I really cannot stand this place. I've tried a few times since I moved here, because people rave about it, but the tables are dirty, the burgers are dry, fries are limp and greasy. The place always has tweekers and drunks coming in and out. I'm definitely not comfortable taking my kids inside. Their one saving grace is their milkshakes. They have about 100 different flavorings, and you can have them however you want them and they're delicious.

Great burgers! Thanks to Stella P's review, I went and checked this place out that I had drove by a billion times. These are old school burgers. They have the hand patted type made from fresh local beef or the thin old schoolers. Shakes are hand made and GOOOOOD! Fries could be improved on a little, but not bad. They have limited outdoor seating and inside is limited to about eight booths. As an FYI, this guy also owns Giant Burger in Springfield. Look for the cool neon Bonanza Drive Up sign on the south end of the Grove and your there!
